For three years, talking to ChatGPT has meant reading text. On October 7, OpenAI started changing that. GPT-6 now ships in ChatGPT with Intelligent UI, and it may matter more than the model behind it.
What Intelligent UI actually does
Instead of always returning paragraphs, ChatGPT can now build the answer from text, visuals and interactive elements, depending on the question. That means tappable buttons, forms, charts, editable graphs and small working tools inside the conversation, as 9to5Mac's launch coverage describes.
Typical examples from OpenAI's launch:
- A savings or retirement calculator where you change the numbers and watch the result update
- A bill splitter or a simple game created on request
- A diagram that explains how an airplane wing generates lift, from the demo OpenAI showed TechCrunch
- A recipe with timings next to each step
When plain text is the best answer, ChatGPT still gives plain text. If the visuals are too much, there is a setting to dial them back.
Rollout and who gets what
Plan | Model | Availability |
|---|---|---|
Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise | GPT-6 Sol | From October 7 |
Free, Go | GPT-6 Luna | From October 8 |
Enterprise admins control whether the feature is switched on for their organization. Intelligent UI works from Instant through Extra High reasoning, but not with the Pro reasoning option, which still runs on GPT-6 Astra. It also applies to the Chat experience, not OpenAI's Work or Codex models (details).
Faster, too
GPT-6 can begin answering while it is still reasoning, then add detail as it goes. OpenAI says GPT-6 Instant starts answering web-search questions 44% faster on average than GPT-5.6 Instant. These are OpenAI's own internal figures, so treat them as a vendor claim until independent tests appear.
Why this matters
The interesting shift is from answering to building. A chatbot that generates a small purpose-made app for each question is closer to a software layer than to a search box. OpenAI itself described Intelligent UI as an early step toward software that adapts to what people want.
It also raises open questions:
- Reliability: a calculator that looks authoritative but has a subtle bug is worse than a paragraph that hedges. Anyone shipping AI-generated interfaces in a real product still needs proper security testing and code review.
- Limits: OpenAI's launch post does not say how many Intelligent UI answers each plan gets.
- Competition: Google, Apple and Anthropic are all pushing assistants toward richer interfaces and agents, so expect this to become table stakes quickly.
What it means for businesses
If answers become interactive, the way people discover and use your product through AI assistants changes too. Content that is structured and easy for AI to cite will matter more, which is exactly what technical SEO, GEO and AEO work targets. And if you want to build this kind of interactive experience into your own product, that is a job for custom software development. If you're still deciding where AI fits in your stack, IT and technology consulting is a good place to start.
Bottom line
GPT-6 is a faster model, but Intelligent UI is the headline. If it works as shown, the default way people use AI shifts from reading answers to using them.
