By Ramin Moradi · Published 25 October 2026 · Figures checked against OpenAI's help pages on 25 October 2026
ChatGPT ads cost at least $25 a day in the US (£15 in the UK, €15 in the eurozone), and OpenAI suggests starting CPC bids at $3 to $5 a click. That minimum works out to roughly $750 over a 30-day month. You can buy them yourself through OpenAI's self-serve Ads Manager, but the reporting is thin, targeting works on hints rather than keywords, and practitioners in a recent r/PPC thread mostly describe the results as hard to read.
So our answer for most small businesses is "not yet, unless you can measure a sale". If your site already records a lead or purchase as a conversion and you can afford to lose a month's minimum spend, a small test is reasonable. If you can't see conversions today, ChatGPT is the wrong place to start paying for clicks.
The cost and targeting figures below come from OpenAI's own help pages and announcements, which we re-read on the morning this was published. They change often.
What are ChatGPT ads, and who sees them?
ChatGPT ads are sponsored listings that appear below ChatGPT's answers, shown only to adult users on the Free and Go plans (OpenAI: ChatGPT ads expands to 26 new countries). OpenAI says it does not show ads to people on Plus, Pro or any Business plan, or to accounts it identifies as belonging to under-18s (OpenAI Help: Ads in ChatGPT, the basics).
Each ad has your business name, a favicon, a headline, a short description, an image and a landing page (OpenAI Help: Ads in ChatGPT, the basics). OpenAI says ads are labelled as sponsored, kept separate from the answer, and do not change what ChatGPT says (OpenAI: Testing ads in ChatGPT).
That last point matters for this post. Buying an ad gets you a slot under the answer. It does not get your business mentioned inside the answer. Getting mentioned is an organic job, and it belongs to our SEO, GEO and AEO work, not to your ad budget.
The audience is big. On 21 October 2026, OpenAI said more than 1.2 billion people use ChatGPT each week, over 100,000 advertisers have run campaigns, and ads now run in 89 countries (OpenAI, 21 Oct 2026). The UK, Mexico, Brazil, Japan and South Korea were added in an update dated 11 August 2026 (OpenAI: Testing ads in ChatGPT). Self-serve buying came earlier: the Ads Manager beta and CPC bidding began rolling out on 5 May 2026 (OpenAI: New ways to buy ChatGPT ads).
How much do ChatGPT ads cost?
ChatGPT ads cost whatever you bid in an auction, with a minimum daily budget of 25 USD, 15 GBP, 15 EUR, 25 CAD or 25 AUD depending on your billing currency. You pay per 1,000 impressions or per valid click, never per conversion (OpenAI Help: Creating campaigns).
You pick one of three campaign objectives, and the objective sets how you're billed:
Objective | How you pay | Source |
|---|---|---|
Views | Per 1,000 impressions (CPM) | |
Clicks | Per valid click (CPC) | same |
Conversions | Per valid click (oCPC) or per 1,000 impressions (oCPM). "You do not pay per conversion." | same |
For click campaigns, OpenAI's own advice is: "we recommend starting with a maximum bid of $3–$5 USD per click." The auction is "relevance-weighted, second-price", so a winning ad can pay less than its maximum bid (OpenAI Help: the basics).

What the minimum budget means over a month
Here is the arithmetic on OpenAI's published numbers, assuming you set the minimum daily budget and pay your full maximum bid on every click:
US (USD) | UK (GBP) | Eurozone (EUR) | |
|---|---|---|---|
Minimum daily budget | 25 | 15 | 15 |
30 days at the minimum | 750 | 450 | 450 |
Most one day can spend (2x) | 50 | 30 | 30 |
Most one budget week can spend (7x) | 175 | 105 | 105 |
Clicks a day at $3 to $5 per click | 5 to 8 | n/a | n/a |
Clicks in 30 days at $3 to $5 per click | 150 to 250 | n/a | n/a |
OpenAI only publishes the $3 to $5 bid suggestion in dollars, so we haven't converted the click counts to pounds or euros. And second-price auctions mean the real cost per click can come in under your bid, which would buy more clicks than the table shows.
The daily budget is an average, not a cap
A daily budget in ChatGPT Ads Manager is "the average amount you want the campaign to spend per day over a 7-day period". On any single day, spend can go up to twice the daily budget, and across the budget week (Sunday to Saturday in your account's timezone) it won't go past seven times the daily figure (OpenAI Help: Creating campaigns).
If you want a firmer ceiling, OpenAI describes the campaign-total budget as "the stricter control for total spend". OpenAI's page suggests new advertisers start with a daily budget so they can watch delivery. For a small business's first test we'd still pick the campaign-total budget and check delivery by hand each day, because the total is the number you agreed you could lose. Choose carefully: OpenAI says that once you switch a campaign-total budget to a daily one, you can't switch it back.
Two catches that cost time, not money
New self-serve accounts may only be able to advertise in their home country at first. OpenAI says the account becomes eligible for other countries "once identity verification is approved and you reach the required advertising spend" at home. OpenAI doesn't publish the spend threshold on that page.
Spend reporting also lags. "Spend insights may be delayed 7–8 hours, so a displayed spend of zero does not necessarily mean no charges have accrued" (OpenAI Help: the basics). Don't judge day one at lunchtime.
How does targeting work on ChatGPT?
You target ChatGPT ads by country, region, city or postcode where available, by device platform, and with "context hints" that describe the conversations your ad fits. There are no exact-match keywords. OpenAI says hints "are not exact-match keywords and do not guarantee delivery in specific conversations" (OpenAI Help: the basics).
For a small business, local targeting is the useful part. A plumber in Leeds may be able to limit delivery to the places they serve: OpenAI lists states or regions, cities, markets and postal codes as options "where available" (OpenAI Help: Creating campaigns). Platform targeting covers Android app, Android web, desktop web, iOS app and iOS web.
The hard part is the hints. On Google Ads, you can open the search terms report and see which searches triggered a paid click. OpenAI doesn't list anything like that in its reporting fields, so you can't easily tell which conversations your money went on. OpenAI does offer Negative Phrases, but as a brand-safety control "for narrow placement requirements specific to their brand's own policies", and only to "qualifying advertisers, not necessarily every advertiser". They are not a way to filter out conversations that don't convert.
Custom audiences (uploading your customer list) need at least 25,000 matched users to target, which rules them out for most small firms. OpenAI also says to avoid custom audiences in campaigns aimed at the EEA or Switzerland "while ads personalization is unavailable there".
What can you measure with ChatGPT ads, and what can't you?
ChatGPT Ads Manager reports impressions, clicks, spend, click-through rate, average CPC, average CPM and conversions. Impressions and clicks refresh about every 15 minutes, while spend can lag by 7 to 8 hours (OpenAI Help: the basics).
Conversions only show up if you set up OpenAI's conversion measurement, a pixel or the Conversions API, which OpenAI said in its 5 May 2026 post it had "recently launched" (OpenAI: New ways to buy ChatGPT ads).
OpenAI's conversion measurement page adds two details worth knowing before you trust the number. Reported conversion totals "may include modeled conversions where available", and OpenAI says its totals can differ from your analytics tool's, which "does not necessarily indicate an error". You also need visitors' consent where the law requires it before you send conversion data.
You can also add UTM parameters to your landing page URLs so GA4 or any other analytics tool can separate ChatGPT ad traffic from everything else. OpenAI says those parameters persist on ad clicks.
One trap for your analytics: OpenAI's ad-review crawlers visit landing pages with the tracking parameters attached. OpenAI says third-party analytics "may classify these visits as paid traffic", but you aren't billed for them. Expect a few phantom "paid" sessions in GA4 around the time each ad goes through review, and don't count them as results.
What you can't see:
- which conversations or prompts triggered your ad, because advertisers "do not have access to your chats" and get only aggregate numbers (OpenAI: Testing ads in ChatGPT)
- a search-terms-style report to find wasted spend, since none appears in OpenAI's list of reporting fields
- reliable comparisons on tiny numbers: at 150 to 250 clicks a month, a handful of conversions either way swings your cost per lead a lot

What do early advertisers say about ChatGPT ads?
Practitioners on Reddit's r/PPC are mostly sceptical, with one notable exception. In a thread titled "Has anyone used ChatGPT ads? What was the experience?" (posted 19 October 2026; 31 upvotes and 64 comments when we read it on 25 October), the most-upvoted reply called it "still very much a beta product" and said "both the controls and the data available through ads.chatgpt are very limited" (r/PPC thread).
The next most-upvoted reply put the reporting problem plainly: "It's fun to play with, but it's very much a black box." Others wrote "Lots of clicks, no sales" and "So much bot traffic - not worth it". One advertiser in the education niche said their cost per lead was close to Google Ads and one account was profitable from the first week.
These are a handful of people on a forum, not a study. We quote them because they line up with OpenAI's own documentation: reporting is limited, there's no keyword report, and conversions are something you have to set up yourself.
ChatGPT ads vs Google Ads for a small business
For a small business with a fixed budget, Google Ads is still easier to measure. Google's search terms report shows the searches that triggered your ads, and negative keywords let you exclude the ones you don't want. ChatGPT ads reach people mid-conversation, but you see far less about why a click happened.
ChatGPT ads (OpenAI help pages, 25 Oct 2026) | Google Ads (Google Ads Help) | |
|---|---|---|
What triggers the ad | Conversation context plus your context hints, which are "not exact-match keywords" | Keywords you choose, with broad, phrase or exact match |
Seeing what triggered it | Not among OpenAI's listed reporting fields | |
Blocking bad matches | No equivalent (Negative Phrases are a brand-safety placement control, for qualifying advertisers only) | |
Published minimum daily budget | 25 USD / 15 GBP / 15 EUR | Not covered in this post |
There's also a traffic-scale point, with a caveat. Marie Haynes looked at 12 months of GA4 data from 100 websites and found that visits from ChatGPT came to 0.62% of the visits from Google organic search. Among the 55 sites that tracked conversions, ChatGPT visitors converted at 13.8% against 3.02% for Google organic, but Google still drove 96.5% of conversions across the channels she analysed (Search Engine Journal, 23 Oct 2026; Search Engine Land summary).
Those are organic referrals, people clicking links inside ChatGPT answers, not ad clicks. They tell you ChatGPT isn't yet a big source of website visits for most sites. They don't tell you how ChatGPT ads will perform. Haynes also found that 45 of the 100 sites weren't tracking any key events at all, which is the more useful warning for anyone about to buy ads anywhere.
If you test ChatGPT ads: a 30-day plan
Run a test only if you can track a sale or lead today and can afford the minimum spend without needing it back. This is the plan we'd follow for a small business:
- Set up one conversion before you spend anything. Pick the action that pays your bills (a booked call, a quote request, a purchase), install OpenAI's pixel or Conversions API, and check the event fires.
- Use one landing page that matches the ad, with UTM parameters on the URL so the traffic is labelled in GA4.
- Set a campaign-total budget, the stricter of OpenAI's two budget types. At the US minimum, 30 days is $750; decide in advance whether that's your ceiling. The same "cap it before you start" thinking runs through our guide to AI automation costs.
- Target only the places you serve, and write context hints that describe your customers' problems in their words.
- Bid in OpenAI's suggested $3 to $5 range for a Clicks campaign and leave it alone for the first week while data builds up.
- Write your stop rule down on day one. For example: if half the budget has gone and there's no tracked lead, pause and review. Pick a rule you'll follow.
- At day 30, compare cost per lead with what you pay on Google or Meta for the same offer, using your own CRM or sales records rather than the ad dashboard alone.
If you'd rather someone else watched the numbers, our growth marketing team sets up conversion events "you can see in the ad account and on the site", and runs A/B tests one change at a time.
When should a small business skip ChatGPT ads for now?
Skip ChatGPT ads for now if any of these is true:
- Your site doesn't record a lead or sale as a conversion. Fix that first; you need it on every channel anyway.
- You can't afford to lose $750, £450 or €450 (the 30-day minimum) without changing your plans.
- Your Google or Meta campaigns aren't yet profitable. A channel with less reporting won't be easier.
- Your customers' conversations fall in areas OpenAI keeps ads away from. When the test began, OpenAI said ads were not eligible to appear near "sensitive or regulated topics like health, mental health or politics" (OpenAI: Testing ads in ChatGPT).
- Your customers are mainly on paid ChatGPT plans. Plus, Pro and Business users don't see ads.
None of this is permanent. On 21 October, OpenAI said its next phase includes "additional formats, objectives, buying options, and measurement capabilities" (OpenAI, 21 Oct 2026). We don't know when, and we'd read the help pages again before anyone spends.
FAQ
How much do ChatGPT ads cost per click?
OpenAI recommends starting with a maximum bid of $3 to $5 per click for CPC campaigns. Because the auction is second-price, the actual cost per click can be lower than your maximum bid.
What is the minimum budget for ChatGPT ads?
The minimum daily budget is 25 USD, 15 GBP, 15 EUR, 25 CAD or 25 AUD, depending on your billing currency. Over 30 days, the US minimum adds up to $750.
Can a daily budget overspend on ChatGPT ads?
On a single day, yes, up to twice your daily budget. Across the Sunday-to-Saturday budget week, spend won't exceed seven times the daily budget. A campaign-total budget is the stricter limit.
Do ChatGPT ads charge per conversion?
No. Even conversion-optimised campaigns bill per valid click (oCPC) or per 1,000 impressions (oCPM). OpenAI's help page says, "You do not pay per conversion."
Are ChatGPT ads available in the UK?
Yes. In an update dated 11 August 2026, OpenAI said ChatGPT Ads "has now launched in the United Kingdom". The UK minimum daily budget is 15 GBP.
Do ChatGPT ads make ChatGPT recommend my business?
No. OpenAI says ads are separate from answers and "do not influence the answers ChatGPT gives you". Being mentioned in answers is an organic search job.
